How to Take a Screenshot on Windows Using the Snipping Tool

The Snipping Tool is another built-in Windows utility that allows users to better define and capture portions of their desktop display as a screenshot, without using a keyboard shortcut.  Snipping Tools also allows you to share them with friends and family through email. This feature is available on all versions of Windows, with the exception of Starter and Basic editions, and Windows XP.

A positive aspect of Snipping Tool is that it allows you to personalize your screenshots, choosing the shape and the dimension of the image you want to seize.

How to Take a Screenshot on Windows Using the Snipping Tool Step by Step

Step 1:

Open Snipping Tool

How to Open Snipping Tool in Windows 7: Select the Start button, then type snipping tool in the search box, and then select Snipping Tool from the list of results.

How to Open Snipping Tool in Windows 8.1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Search type snipping tool in the search box, and then select Snipping Tool from the list of results.

How to Open Snipping Tool in Windows 10: Select the Start button, type snipping tool in the search box on the taskbar, and then select Snipping Tool from the list of results.

Step 2:

Capture a snip

The program will switch to the Snipping Tool window, with three different options to choose: New, Cancel and Options.

To take a screenshot, you will need to click on New.

After that, drag the cursor around the area you want to snapshot.

Step 3:

Save the screenshot

Perform any edits you want, such as highlights or annotations. Now click on File.

Afterward, select Save As, title the new file, choose a save location, and select your desired file format from the drop-down menu.

Keyboard shortcuts for Snipping Tool

Alt + M: Choose a snipping mode

Alt + N: Create a new snip in the same mode as the last one

Shift + arrow keys: Move the cursor to select a rectangular snip area

Alt + D: Delay capture by 1-5 seconds

Ctrl + C: Copy the snip to clipboard

Ctrl +  Save the snip 

Using the keyboard shortcuts

Windows captures the entire screen and copies it to the clipboard. Assuming the area you want to capture is displayed on your screen, press the Print Screen Key. Look for this group of keys at the upper right of your keyboard.

Alternatively, press Alt + Print Screen to capture a screenshot of the active window.

On a laptop, you may need to press Fn + Print Screen.

Where can I paste it?

  • Open “Paint”
  • Paste
  • Save

With Microsoft Paint open, and the screenshot still saved in the clipboard, just use Ctrl+V to paste it into Paint.

Or, find the Paste button to do the same thing.

Save the Screenshot

You can save the screenshot with Ctrl+S or File -> Save as.

Using the Print Screen Program

WinSnap is a fast and user-friendly utility for taking and editing screenshots.

PrtScr. WinSnap and Snipping Tool are very nice but it has a professional version with a fee, so the free edition lacks some of those more advanced features.

OneDrive or Dropbox  in Windows 10

You have another option for taking and storing screenshots: OneDrive. Microsoft’s cloud file storage service, once opened, will ask you if you’d like to automatically save your screenshots to the cloud every time you hit the Print Screen key.

Or Dropbox and have the application installed on your Windows machine, you can opt to have all screen captures saved to your cloud storage automatically.

OneDrive: If you’d like to save your screenshots to OneDrive. Go ahead and confirm, and from now on, a PNG of your screenshot will be saved to OneDrive every time you press Print Screen.

This also works for Alt + Print Screen, which takes a screenshot of the active window instead of the entire desktop. Your computer will make no sound or other indication when you take a screenshot, but the photos will automatically be saved to OneNote.

Captures using the Print Screen key will be saved locally, either at OneDrive -> Pictures -> Screenshots or Dropbox -> Screenshots, and automatically synced to your cloud storage.
